Best Dad Ever Father’s Day Card

I’m traveling today so not much time to write. As I mentioned yesterday, I drove to Nashville to be here for my niece’s bridal shower earlier in the week and I was supposed to have gone home two days ago, but my family just kept talking me into staying just one more day! Before I knew it I had been here all week and I’ve got to get home and back to work!

It’s been so fun being here. We have watched movies, visited and played a lot of Settlers of Catan.

Have you played Settlers of Catan? It’s addictive! It starts out slow but pretty quickly it starts to get really interesting and then it’s over, which just makes you want to play again. We changed the rules a little though because we were too competitive and it caused problems. I’ve known families that stopped playing it because it was causing so much animosity. So I came up with new rules that we adopted that make it a more friendly game. We do not use the robber at all and I’m sure purists wouldn’t approve of my new rules. Not using the robber does change the ability to stop someone who is racing ahead but in the spirit of family fun, the changes are worth it.

How to Make an Ombre Chevron Birthday Card

This birthday card is simple, but it includes some great trendy elements: ombre color and a chevron pattern. Ombre style is all the rage in hair color, but what about incorporating it into your card making? And ombre has French origins which makes it super chic.

I’ve created a video to show you how I made this ombre, chevron birthday card. You can view the supply list and video below.

This card is not about perfection, it’s about highlighting the chevron pattern with a trendy technique and creating a fun card to celebrate a birthday. Don’t get hung up on perfection because you will likely get a little ink where you didn’t want it, but it’s all part of the effect.

I chose Regal Rose for this card because this color is being discontinued and it is one of my favorites. But the good news is Island Indigo will continue in the new collection instead of retiring this year and Rose Red will continue in the Stampin’ Up! regal collection line up. Bloomin’ Marvelous CAS Sketch Challenge

I love the simple layout of this card created with the Bloomin’ Marvelous and Mixed Bunch stamp set. I love it so much that I’m excited to have you play along! Here’s the sketch. I purposely did not give you dimensions because I’d prefer you customize your dimensions and have fun with it. I love sketches because it makes creating soooo much easier if you already have a design in mind. It’s kind of the ‘complete pancake mix’ of crafting! Instead of ‘just add water’, ‘just add paper’!! Sometimes I like to just pick up a scrap on my craft table and make it work. I think some of my best work has started that way.

Here’s a close up. I stamped the background flowers from Bloomin’ Marvelous with versamark on the Basic Gray cardstock and then stamped the sentiment in Black StazOn over that. To finish the button, because I don’t like buttons without a finish, I added a rhinestone to the top. A super easy solution to naked buttons!!

And here’s another variation. I used the same More Amore Specialty Designer Series Paper (not just for Valentine’s Day) and the same Primrose Petals stamped and punched flower, then changed up the background paper, the ribbon and used butterflies.

Can you see that I heat embossed the butterflies on the background? I also stamped and punched a scallop circle to layer under the button.

Praying For You

I can’t hardly watch the news this week because of the reports of the movie massacre in Colorado. It just makes me so sad! I just keep thinking of all the families (including the family of the suspect) that are hurting deeply because of this senseless violence.

I thought about them as I made this card last night.

Five years ago I started blogging on a blog I called creative distraction. I called it creative distraction because it was a distraction from my pain of losing my two youngest children in a car accident in the spring of that year. So seeing the suffering is very real to me. My thoughts and prayers are truly with these families.

So no long explanation today. No card recipe. Just prayers for the many who are suffering.

Please forgive me for being so personal.
